GLEN
ELLYN, IL Humans arent the only beings looking
for a healthier lifestyle. A number of studies have indicated that
American pet health is in serious need of reform. A new breed of
pet store, Natural Pet Market (www.naturalpetmarket.com) launched
in 2002 in response to a cry for holistic and eco-friendly pet products.
And did it catch on? Just ask owner, Tracy Werner, who will celebrate
the grand opening of her retail store at 820 N. Main Street in Glen
Ellyn, Ill., February 21-28. "The public has responded so positively,"
said Werner. "Pets are a part of the family. They are loved,
treasured. There is an obvious trend toward keeping up-to-date on
animal health and the use of organic products. The success of the
on-line store and local buzz were strong enough to encourage me
to open up a shop."
Ample free parking is available at the "five
corners" location, situated at the intersection of Main, St.
Charles, and Geneva streets approximately one mile
north of downtown Glen Ellyn.
Natural Pet Market offers all natural, ecologically
friendly products for companion animals. Products are carefully
selected based upon quality of ingredients and materials as well
as the impact they have on the environment. The web site is designed
to be user-friendly with research and ingredient information, tips
for pet owners, toys, treats, special pampering options for furry
loved ones, specific allergy-related options, and boasts product
lines not found in todays grocery stores or pet superstores.
Natural Pet Markets retail store carries these same product
lines including Animal's Apawthecary Herbal Remedies, Animal Essentials
Herbal Supplements, Dr. Harvey's Canine Cuisine and Herbal Supplements,
Amore Frozen Raw Dog & Cat Food, Wellness Dog and Cat Food &
Treats, Planet Dog eco-friendly toys, collars, & leashes, Halo,
Purely for Pets herbal pet care, Grrroom Dog Aromatherapy pet care
products, and much more.
The goal of Natural Pet Market, according
to Werner, is to build a collection of the best, all-natural, eco-friendly
food and products for our animal companions in an easy to use and
informative web site and store. "I had to search endless avenues
for eco-friendly food, research, and animal health tips that were
not somehow funded by the marketing department of commercial pet
food companies," said Werner, a pet owner, animal rescue advocate,
and environmental enthusiast. "I found thousands out there,
like me, who could not find reasons for or solutions to their pets
scratching, dull coat, heaving, bladder infections, and general
poor health. I wanted to gather it all in one, informative and savvy
site. Now, with the launch of our Glen Ellyn store, Im looking
forward to some of the personal feedback that is so important to
anyone who opens a business that aims to nurture."
Just as traditional medical doctors are changing
the way they think about the relationship between disease and nutrition,
so has the veterinary community opened its eyes in light of research
conducted in the last decade.
Disturbed by recent allegations of cruel
and invasive nutrition research funded, conducted by or under the
direction of The Iams Company (Iams), the Animal Protection Institute
(API) challenged the Association of American Feed Control Officials,
Inc. (AAFCO) to adopt new pet food industry guidelines against the
practice in August of 2001. API also requested that the Center for
Veterinary Medicine, a division of the federal Food and Drug Administration,
adopt the proposal.
Exposés by Anne Martin for Nexus Magazine,
John Eckhouse for the San Francisco Chronicle and Dr Wendell O.
Belfield, D.V.M. and Martin Zucker in their book How to Have a Healthier
Dog have helped pet owners to recognize the importance of healthy
alternatives to commercial pet food.
Vets have begun to see that the role of species-appropriate
diets are just as important as pharmaceuticals in treating illness.
Dogs and cats are getting sicker the rates of cancer
and other serious diseases are on the rise. "There is much
debate as to the cause," said Werner, "but environment
and nutrition have been found to play a role along with genetics.
By providing a chemical free environment and natural, human grade,
whole foods, a pet owner can help turn those odds to his or her
favor. "We formed Natural Pet Market because we love our animals
and we want them to live long and healthy lives and
we want your pets to live long and healthy lives, too. Thats
our mission.
"We value the responsibility of a symbiotic
relationship with our pets and our environment and believe that
what we put onto and into our pets has an effect on their health
and the well-being of the environment," said Werner. "Most
people dont realize that their dogs or cats itchy
skin, dull coat, or allergies can be cleared up by simply feeding
a diet rich in whole foods and eliminating harmful chemicals in
their environment."
The cost of a more natural diet and lifestyle
may initially seem higher than traditional options, but in the long
run owners find themselves feeding less because of the high nutritional
value and bioavailability of the food. Pricey trips to the vet are
greatly reduced as well. With a slew of innovative and new holistic
products to choose from, pet owners report they have actually been
saving time in both meal preparation and grooming.
At www.naturalpetmarket.com, the products
are categorized by type of animal (cat or dog), type of product
(food, treats, toys, collars, more), and the health issue needing
to be addressed. Natural Pet Market ships anywhere in the U.S. via
UPS, offers a 30-day money back satisfaction guarantee, and accepts
Visa, MasterCard, and Discover on their web site via a secure bank
server. The same attention to detail and service is found at the
Glen Ellyn store, plus the grand opening will feature "lots
of promos and free giveaways" Werner noted. "I am also
sponsoring and hosting a canine acupressure seminar in June and
plan to hold other seminars such as essential oils for animals,
massage therapy for dogs,
animal communication lectures and if I'm really ambitious,
bused field trips to local animal-lover events."
Natural Pet Markets site offers a pet
food ingredient database listing the definitions of common ingredients
in commercial pet food, a gift finder wizard, and an ever-growing
collection of natural pet-related Internet links.
Werner first sparked interest in natural
pet health and nutrition when one of her Golden Retrievers, AJ,
developed arthritis, allergies, and eventually cancer after a lifelong
regimen of commonly found pet foods. After switching from commercial
kibble, shampoo, and treats to a homemade diet, AJs improvement
was drastic. "His allergies cleared up and he was playing ball
like a puppy again in a matter of weeks," said Werner. "The
new approach to his overall well-being also made his teeth pearly
white and his coat shinier than ever."
In the end, nothing could save AJ from the cancer. His death gave
Werner her drive to bring a new style of pet store to the fingertips
of American pet-lovers. Now, public drive has provoked a retail
walk-in option for Chicago-area animal lovers. Natural Pet Market
is found at www.naturalpetmarket.com. The web site is always available
with the on-line market open 24 hours per day. The retail store,
Natural Pet Market in Glen Ellyn, Ill., finds Werner behind the
counter 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. She can be reached
by phone at 630-534-6682, and by fax at 630-534-6683. E-mails can
be sent to Werner directly from www.naturalpetmarket.com.
